Summary

Ray Bradbury’s internationally acclaimed novel Fahrenheit 451 is a masterwork of twentieth-century literature set in a bleak, dystopian future。

Guy Montag is a fireman。 In his world, where television rules and literature is on the brink of extinction, firemen start fires rather than put them out。 His job is to destroy the most illegal of commodities, the printed book, along with the houses in which they are hidden。

Montag never questions the destruction and ruin his actions produce, returning each day to his bland life and wife, Mildred, who spends all day with her television “family。” But then he meets an eccentric young neighbor, Clarisse, who introduces him to a past where people didn’t live in fear and to a present where one sees the world through the ideas in books instead of the mindless chatter of television。

When Mildred attempts suicide and Clarisse suddenly disappears, Montag begins to question everything he has ever known。 He starts hiding books in his home, and when his pilfering is discovered, the fireman has to run for his life。

I loved the premise of the book how the world stopped the people from reading because they didn't want the people to have knowledge and the knowledge is power。 Once you have knowledge people will start to ask questions。The characters were flat like what most people have said。 Not much have done for the characters development。 I don't think I would pick up this book again, it just wasn't for me。 I loved the premise of the book how the world stopped the people from reading because they didn't want the people to have knowledge and the knowledge is power。 Once you have knowledge people will start to ask questions。The characters were flat like what most people have said。 Not much have done for the characters development。 I don't think I would pick up this book again, it just wasn't for me。 。。。more

The plot and symbolism of the story is solid overall。 The message is okay, but where I struggle with regards to the issue of free speech isn’t with regards to burning off great works of literature and science (that’s an obvious case where it’s wrong), but in the more challenging cases。 In Germany, for example, Nazi paraphernalia is outlawed, from my understanding。 Would we be against that?So this book isn’t just about censorship, but tyrannical anti-intellectualism that censors great works, with The plot and symbolism of the story is solid overall。 The message is okay, but where I struggle with regards to the issue of free speech isn’t with regards to burning off great works of literature and science (that’s an obvious case where it’s wrong), but in the more challenging cases。 In Germany, for example, Nazi paraphernalia is outlawed, from my understanding。 Would we be against that?So this book isn’t just about censorship, but tyrannical anti-intellectualism that censors great works, with the conclusion that the latter is a bad thing。 In that sense, it’s a broadly agreeable message, I assume and hope。 That said, tyrannical anti-intellectualism is still prevalent in some parts of the world, particularly when it comes to access to women’s right to receiving an education, and has historically been prevalent in lots of ways。 I disagree, as far as the message goes, that tv itself is problematic in comparison to reading。 Lots of books have been turned into movies, and vice-versa。 There’s overlap between the two mediums, and while I enjoy reading quite a bit, it’s difficult for me to put down tv/film as a medium, with directors like Stanley Kubrick or Kurosawa, without feeling like I’m being a pretentious snob。 Besides the message of the novel, the novels uses lots of metaphors。 While it’s sometimes poetic and adds to the story, often, when it’s applied to tiny details within the story, it disrupts the flow of the reading, particularly when the metaphors are overly clunky and require multiple re-readings to understand what the author is trying to communicate。 I had previously given the book 1/5 stars, since I stopped reading the book due to frustration with the clunky metaphors, and listening to the book on audiobook this time around helped me finish the book (an irony, given the criticism of the novel of radio and television)。 。。。more

Idk how I feel about this。 It feels like the story and point fell off around halfway, and it was very cut and dry。 It didn't feel like there was any nuance。 I'm glad I read it so I could see what was up but at the same time I feel like it needs to be rewritten to fit the modern age so it's easier to understand。 If I read this when I was in high school I definitely would've hated it because it wouldn't have made any sense。 Idk how I feel about this。 It feels like the story and point fell off around halfway, and it was very cut and dry。 It didn't feel like there was any nuance。 I'm glad I read it so I could see what was up but at the same time I feel like it needs to be rewritten to fit the modern age so it's easier to understand。 If I read this when I was in high school I definitely would've hated it because it wouldn't have made any sense。 。。。more

The fact that this book was written in 1953 amazes me。 To say that this book is highly applicable to our current times is an understatement。

(3。75/5) 1 hour 45 minutes - A very reflective and speculative dystopia I read in attempt to read more 'classic' books。 I really liked the characters and plot, even if both were written in a confusing way at times。 One of my favourite scenes was Beatty's speech about the purpose of burning books - it is one of the greatest passages I think I have ever read。 Some of the book is written in a way that is intentionally vague but I just found it hard to understand what was going on at these times。 Ho (3。75/5) 1 hour 45 minutes - A very reflective and speculative dystopia I read in attempt to read more 'classic' books。 I really liked the characters and plot, even if both were written in a confusing way at times。 One of my favourite scenes was Beatty's speech about the purpose of burning books - it is one of the greatest passages I think I have ever read。 Some of the book is written in a way that is intentionally vague but I just found it hard to understand what was going on at these times。 However, overall, this was a very good book deserving of its status in today's view of literature。 。。。more

I don't know, something about this book is just so good。 I feel like sometimes Bradbury might go over the top with the abundance of similies, but it's fine and can be an interesting style to follow along。 The book may be increasingly relevant (obviously not to that extent) but I mean with the rise of cancel culture。 Good read, definitely worth it。 I don't know, something about this book is just so good。 I feel like sometimes Bradbury might go over the top with the abundance of similies, but it's fine and can be an interesting style to follow along。 The book may be increasingly relevant (obviously not to that extent) but I mean with the rise of cancel culture。 Good read, definitely worth it。 。。。more

。。。more

I'm glad I picked up a newer addition of this book, the introduction and afterword written by Bradbury give a depth and context to both the writing and publication of this work that I might have missed otherwise。 As a classic I don't feel like I have any fresh takes on this book, though I'll admit the similes got a little tiresome for my taste at some points。 I'm glad I picked up a newer addition of this book, the introduction and afterword written by Bradbury give a depth and context to both the writing and publication of this work that I might have missed otherwise。 As a classic I don't feel like I have any fresh takes on this book, though I'll admit the similes got a little tiresome for my taste at some points。 。。。more
